Widelands

Widelands is an open-source RTS with both single-player and multiplayer campaigns, inspired by The Settlers II, but with significantly greater variety and depth.

In Widelands, an open-source real-time strategy game developed by the Widelands Development Team, you assume the role of regent of a small clan, starting with nothing but your headquarters, where all resources are stored. Along with its inspiration from the mechanics and themes of The Settlers II, its graphics have a nostalgic style, evoking 90s strategy games.

Throughout the game, you will expand your settlement, with each clan member contributing to the production of resources such as wood, food, iron, and gold, fostering the continuous growth of your civilization. Despite the increased depth and complexity compared to The Settlers II, the game maintains ease of entry through playable tutorials.

Widelands is extensible, allowing players to create their own tribes, worlds, and scenarios, limited only by creativity, including settlements on the moon. The game supports mods, which can even be published on the official website.

Developed and maintained by an open-source community, Widelands is continuously updated. Anyone can contribute to the development of the game, and it is available on various platforms, including Windows, Mac and Linux.

Mechanics

• Complex Economic Network – The game features a detailed and varied economic network for the five playable clans (Barbarians, Empire, Atlanteans, Frisians and Amazons). Each clan has its own set of challenges and characteristics.
• Road System – A unique aspect of the game is the road system, which plays a central role in the economy. All goods harvested and processed must be transported between buildings along the roads, made by carriers who always follow these routes. Efficiency in road construction is crucial for economic success.
• Management and Command – Instead of managing each individual, you give general orders, such as building structures or attacking enemies. Builders and soldiers will follow your orders, facilitating the management of large populations and battles.

Game modes

• Campaign Mode – Offers several campaigns with stories about tribes and their struggles in the Widelands universe.
• Multiplayer – Allows you to play with friends over the Internet or LAN, whether to build empires together or compete in battles.
• Artificial Intelligence – Challenge yourself against the game’s AI for a more robust solo gaming experience.
