Monument Valley II is the first sequel to the independent puzzle game Monument Valley, which features impossible-geometry environments, now allowing players to control Roe and her daughter, instead of just a single character like in the original game. It was developed by Ustwo Games and initially released on June 5, 2017.

While retaining the essence and minimalist style of the first title, including its focus on exploration, this sequel expands the experience by introducing 14 chapters (not only 10 anymore) and addressing new narrative themes such as growth and maturation, contrasting with the emphasis on forgiveness and redemption found in its predecessor.

Published by Ustwo Games and available on iOS, Android, Windows, Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, Monument Valley II received positive reviews from both critics and the market, earning awards and accumulating, at least up to the time of this publication, thousands of “very positive” reviews on Steam. In 2024, the series continued with the release of Monument Valley III.

Gameplay

Presented in isometric view, Monument Valley II tasks players with guiding Roe and her daughter through mazes featuring optical illusions and impossible objects. Players can tap the screen to move either Roe or her daughter (depending on the chapter) or trigger changes in the level’s architecture to complete the puzzle.

The game is divided into 14 chapters, each introducing new mechanics and gameplay variations. In the early levels, Roe is the only playable character, but her daughter joins her in the second chapter and later becomes an essential part of solving the puzzles. At certain points, the two characters follow separate paths, requiring complementary solutions for each.

New features include levels where the daughter tries to stay close to Roe, sections in which the player directly controls the child, and stages where both characters can be manipulated independently. The game also brings back the totem mechanic from the previous title, now with new functions such as creating horizontal bridges or supporting platform movement. Other levels introduce additional mechanics, such as manipulating light to make trees grow or shrink, as well as movable platforms that connect to different parts of the environment.

This variety of interactions expands the diversity of puzzles, offering a distinct experience compared to the first Monument Valley, while preserving the series’ minimalist and intuitive style.
