Monument Valley is an independent puzzler that follows a journey of redemption, where players explore mazes of impossible geometry and optical illusions while manipulating the world around them to reach various platforms. It was developed by Ustwo Games and originally released on April 3, 2014.
The game does not feature dialogues or long texts, with its story conveyed through atmosphere and symbolism. Its visual style was inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, minimalist sculptures, and indie titles such as Windosill, Fez, and Sword & Sworcery. The title is considered accessible, and there is also a silence and an overall melancholic tone that makes it contemplative.
Published by Ustwo Games itself, the title is available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows, Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Monument Valley was generally well received by critics and it was a market success. It also has also gathered thousands of overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, at least as of this writing. Still at to date, the game has two direct sequels, Monument Valley 2 (2017) and Monument Valley 3 (2024).

Gameplay
In Monument Valley, the player controls Princess Ida on a journey through mazes of optical illusions and impossible objects, referred to in-game as “sacred geometry”, as she seeks forgiveness for an unspecified past action. The game is presented in an isometric view, and the player guides Ida by tapping on the screen to move her to a specific location. Progression requires manipulating the environment itself: rotating platforms and pillar animals, turning cranks, sliding blocks, and creating bridges so that Ida can reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
New elements such as buttons, passages and manipulation are gradually introduced with each new level. Players are aided by visual cues, such as small circular markers that indicate interactive elements, and by design features like the use of color to subtly guide exploration, similar to Mirror’s Edge. In certain stages, additional characters appear, including the crow people who block Ida’s path and, in some puzzles, other controllable or movable figures that affect the environment. By pinching it is possible to zoom in. The objectives vary depending on the stage: in some levels Ida must simply reach the exit, while in others she activates switches or lights placed atop towers to complete the puzzle.
The game emphasizes deliberate, gradual transitions when the player manipulates the architecture, reinforcing its artistic and contemplative atmosphere. Critics often compared the visual style to the works of M. C. Escher and to the puzzle game Echochrome. The music is dynamic and reactive: it changes according to the player’s actions (e.g., moving a platform generates sounds that integrate with the melody).
Beyond the main progression, the game offers a camera mode in which players can freely explore levels to compose screenshots. These images can be saved directly to the device, with optional filters similar to those of Instagram. The pause menu also provides access to options such as toggling music and sound effects or resetting progress. Later game updates unlocked a new free chapter Ida’s Dream and also made available a new eight-chapter story Forgotten Shores as an in-app purchase.
