Gameplay

Humankind is a 4X game comparable to the Civilization series where the goal is to lead a civilization through six major eras of human history, starting from the nomadic age. Players decide how to expand their people, develop cities, control military and civilian units, and interact with other civilizations on a randomly generated virtual planet at the start of each game.

A distinguishing feature of Humankind is that, in each era, players can choose one of ten types of civilizations based on historical societies, each offering bonuses and penalties that affect how the civilization is developed. As players can select different civilizations throughout the eras, there are potentially one million different combinations for creating a unique civilization.

City-building follows a model similar to Amplitude’s Endless Legend. In Humankind, each continent is divided into several territories, and players can only build one city per territory. Over time, cities can be expanded, incorporating farms, outlying resources, and more densely populated urban areas near the city center. This allows for the creation of large metropolises within each territory.

Leaders may also need to engage in combat with enemy forces. The game adopts a tactical RPG approach to resolve battles, allowing players to take advantage of terrain and unit special abilities. Each confrontation lasts a maximum of three turns before returning to the main map, allowing wars to extend over several years on the global scale.

During gameplay, players accumulate resources for their civilization — such as food, industry, gold, science, and influence — also similar to Endless Legend, which can be used to speed up production, advance technology, or trade with other cultures.

Additionally, Humankind introduces the concept of Fame, which is earned by achieving feats in the game, such as accumulating influence or gold, defeating enemy units, being the first to discover certain technologies, or building world wonders. Fame is a persistent measure of a civilization’s success compared to others and can influence future decisions in the game. Unlike Civilization, where there are multiple victory conditions, Humankind’s victory is determined solely by the Fame score after a predetermined number of turns or when certain events trigger the end of the game.

The game also includes historical figures and real events with which players can interact throughout the campaign. It’s possible to level up your leader through a metaprogression system to unlock custom visuals, which can be displayed in online multiplayer matches for up to 8 players. It’s said that Humankind also features a scenario editor and modding tools.
