Gameplay
Empyrion – Galactic Survival combines space exploration, shipbuilding, resource gathering, FPS, and survival elements. At the start, players find themselves stranded on an alien planet, where they must survive in a hostile environment filled with strange creatures and environmental hazards like acid rain and irradiated fog. The journey begins with basic tools: a multifunction weapon, a flashlight, and some food supplies, which vary according to the chosen difficulty. Initial survival requires gathering materials and food.
With the help of a portable constructor, activated through the advanced armor suit, players can create a variety of essential objects and components. This includes everything from bases and ground vehicles to spaceships of various sizes. As of the 1.10 update, it’s possible to build hoverbikes, ground hovercraft, small vessels, and even large capital ships. Besides solo survival, Empyrion offers multiplayer modes, allowing players to interact with each other in persistent worlds through trading, alliances, or PvP confrontations.
Resource gathering is fundamental. Players can mine mineral deposits on planets or drill asteroids in search of rare materials, which are crucial for ship and structure crafting. The construction system offers considerable creative freedom: ships and bases can be assembled with various modules, without the need for excessive technical detailing like wiring or energy system connections. This makes it easier to create unique, even strange designs, as long as they meet basic functional requirements.
While combat is present, it’s relatively simple, focusing on defeating alien creatures and aggressive robots. Enemy AI is not particularly challenging, which makes the game more focused on exploration and construction than on combat.
In addition to the traditional modes, Empyrion features survival, creative, and customizable scenario modes, offering a wide range of experiences. In creative mode, players have access to all resources, allowing them to build without time or material constraints. The game also supports Steam Workshop (in the Steam version), enabling the sharing of creations and the use of projects made by other players.
Despite its steep learning curve, especially in building more complex ships, Empyrion – Galactic Survival rewards players with the freedom to explore procedurally generated solar systems and develop impressive constructions. The multiplayer experience with friends can be especially enjoyable, although setting up private servers is somewhat complex and requires external software.

- Wildlife and Enemies – Don’t be fooled by the tranquil wildlife on some planets or the silence in space. Most of the wildlife wants to take a bite out of you. Aggressive robot drones, alien soldiers, and their guardians will try to capture you as soon as they see you. Fight for your life and use an array of weapons against fierce and obscure alien creatures.
- Mining and Resource Gathering – For development and construction, you’ll need to gather and extract resources. Dig into the rich deposits of a planet or drill through an asteroid full of rare minerals. You can also loot alien buildings or dismantle any structure you come across.
- Comprehensive Crafting System – Learn to combine resources and building materials to craft your equipment. Craft your items at your base or while on the move, and equip your creations and ships with a variety of devices, weapons, and tools for different purposes.
- Hunting, Farming, and Food System – Grow your own vegetables and fruit, or hunt creatures for meat to prepare a delicious meal. Some plants help create medical supplies, while others can be harvested and consumed for first aid or to quickly stabilize your empty stomach.
- Experience and Tech Tree – Do what you want and earn experience points for it! Clear out the old and use your points to unlock new and shiny devices in the tech tree.
- Terrain Deformation – Every planet features a voxel-based terrain. You can fully modify and deform the terrain: flatten it for your planetary station, dig holes to find resources, or build a tunnel system for protection. Empyrion is the true sandbox game!
