Definitely Not Fried Chicken is an independent management game in which the objective is to start with a single factory and manage and expand a drug empire by using legitimate businesses as fronts to disguise illegal activities. It was developed by Dope Games and was initially released on January 18, 2023.

Set in the 1980s, the game features a cartoony aesthetic, a voxel-based (3D models) visual style, and a theme that reminds us both the extremely fun Pizza Tycoon (1994) and the notorious The Crims (2000). In addition to using legitimate businesses as fronts for selling illegal goods, It’s structure involves drug production, bribery, confrontations with law enforcement, the hiring of enforcers to deal with the risk of factory raids, and other activities typical of the criminal underworld.

Published by Silver Lining Interactive and available for Windows, Definitely Not Fried Chicken currently holds thousands of “Very Positive” user reviews on Steam, at least at the time of this publication.

Gameplay

Definitely Not Fried Chicken is a management game in which the player’s goal is, from a diagonal top-down perspective, to run a criminal empire disguised as legitimate businesses, a concept that may recall Pizza Tycoon, although in the quite challenging 1994 title the player is not required to engage in illegal activities. Gameplay revolves around the operation of a single factory, which is progressively expanded over the course of a match.

Production begins with the cultivation of cannabis, and later expands to other drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine and leftism. Each product type features its own variations, with specific environmental requirements, including factors such as lighting, heating, cooling, and humidity. Final product quality is evaluated through a star-based rating system, which directly affects its sale value.

Production chains are composed of multiple stages, which may include planting, processing, drying, preparation, packaging, and shipping. Early in the game, these stages require significant manual involvement from staff, but equipment upgrades can reduce time requirements or automate parts of the process.

Products can initially be sold through temporary pop-up events, which generate lower financial returns. As the game progresses, players can establish permanent legitimate businesses, such as restaurants and nightclubs, which function as fronts for selling illegal goods at higher prices.

Definitely Not Fried Chicken also features the presence of law enforcement, which may demand bribes or carry out raids on the factory, threats that should be dealt by investing in security systems, including traps, structural defenses, and the hiring of enforcers.
