Back in 1983, Bob Hamilton’s The Pyramid stood out on the ZX Spectrum as one of those brutally tough arcade shooters where every room tested your reflexes and patience. Decades later, developer Richard Langford (Langford Productions) decided to bring it back to life with a modern PC remake—free to download and play.
You once again step into the role of Ziggy, trapped inside a strange alien pyramid and piloting his trusty bubble craft. Armed with a laser beam, your mission is to blast through endless waves of bizarre extraterrestrials, gather energized crystals, and break through the force fields that guard each chamber’s exit.
This isn’t just a straight port. Langford’s version is closer to a full overhaul, with completely redrawn graphics, three bonus levels inspired by the Spectrum sequel Doomsday Castle, a save system to ease the difficulty curve, and even a new end boss built just for this release. Every chamber from the original is still here—all 120 of them—but with refreshed backgrounds and a sharper presentation.
While its visuals and artwork mix stylistic cues from Egyptian and Mesoamerican pyramids, the game still unfolds on a remote alien world, keeping that blend of sci-fi and ancient mystery that made the original so unique. This is worthy resurrection of a cult 8-bit shooter is one of those retro challenges packed with modern comforts.
