The First Templar is a third-person action-adventure with RPG elements that takes place in a fantasy version of a medieval and historical Europe, if that’s possible. It was developed by Haemimont Games and originally released on May 6, 2011.

This game follows the French Templar Celian d’Arestide and his companion, Marie d’Ibelin, a proclaimed heretic by the Dominican Inquisition who set out on a journey to unravel the mysteries behind the Order of the Templars, participate in a great conspiracy and discover the secret of the Holy Grail.

Published by Kalypso Media and made available for Windows and Xbox 360, The First Templar was moderately received by critics. At least at the time of this publication, it has hundreds of slightly positive reviews on Steam and has a 3.6/5 on GOG. The game has a special edition that comes with DLC and other goodies.

About the game

The First Templar follows the story of two main characters – a French Templar, and his companion, a noble lady who has been proclaimed a heretic. Taking control over these two unlikely allies, the player must uncover the mysteries behind the Templar Order, play a role in a grand conspiracy, and discover the secret of the Holy Grail. The heroes face powerful opponents at every turn, including Sacracen, King Philip the IV of France and the Inquisition.

The First Templar features both single player and co-op modes. When playing solo, the player can switch between the two characters, leaving the control of the second hero to the game’s AI. At any moment a second player can join in and take control of the AI-controlled hero.
