About the game

When a global war nearly decimated humankind, an evil military organization called Oniken takes advantage of the situation to dominate and oppress the few remaining survivors. Even though any resistance to this organization seemed hopeless, a small rebel movement organizes strikes against Oniken. One day, a ninja mercenary named Zaku offers his services to the resistance for unknown reasons. His moves are lethal and now he is the resistance’s only hope.

Oniken is an action platform game highly inspired by the 1980’s, its games and its movies. You can see this not only in the graphics and sound design, but also in Oniken’s story and difficulty.

Every copy of Oniken comes with digital versions of the game manual and the original soundtrack.

Gameplay

Oniken is a 2D action-platformer that draws heavy inspiration from classic 8-bit games like Shadow of the Ninja and Shatterhand. Players control Zaku, a merciless warrior, in a dystopian future where he fights against an authoritarian government using his sword to defeat cybernetic enemies. The game mixes traditional platforming elements with intense combat sequences. Zaku can run, jump, and slash enemies with his sword, while also having access to grenades for long-range attacks. Power-ups scattered throughout levels can enhance his melee attacks.

Each stage is divided into multiple parts, which adds variety to the gameplay. Along with hacking and slashing, there are segments where Zaku rides a hoverboard, introducing a different dynamic to the combat. The stages often culminate in massive boss fights, followed by escape sequences, giving the levels an epic feel despite their modest size.

Oniken is known for its punishing difficulty, staying true to the old-school approach of requiring players to memorize enemy patterns and stage layouts. However, the game is fair in its challenge, relying on aggressive enemies and relentless action rather than cheap hits. The tight, responsive controls and strong level design contribute to a balanced experience, even in the later, more difficult stages.

The game also features unlockable content, including extra levels and characters, rewarding players for their efforts. The remastered version offers enhanced visuals, widescreen support, and cinematic cutscenes that enrich the storytelling and world-building.
