H.E.R.O.I. – A brilliant remake of the Atari 2600 classic

Explore deadly caves, rescue survivors, and relive the golden era of gaming — all with a 16-bit twist.

H.E.R.O.I. – Special Helicopter for Intelligent Objective Rescue is a very cool and free remake of the Atari 2600 classic H.E.R.O. It’s a 2009 platformer developed by the Brazilian team at Route 10 where you’ll explore underground mines in search of survivors, encountering venomous creatures, lava, and other hazards.

If you remember the old H.E.R.O., one of the best titles ever released in the 1980s, you’ll instantly recognize the inspiration. That’s because H.E.R.O.I. is a fantastic retro project that faithfully remakes this iconic classic in a fun and engaging way.

H.E.R.O.I. retains many elements of the original but upgrades the visuals to resemble 16-bit console games like the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. The sound effects have also been improved. Still, by keeping the stage layouts and gameplay largely intact, this remake manages to preserve the spirit and atmosphere of the timeless original, delivering pure nostalgia for veteran gamers. Best of all, it’s completely free and can be played online or downloaded for Windows PCs.
