Gameplay
Directly inspired by the Field of Glory miniature wargaming system, Field of Glory II: Medieval is a turn-based tactical strategy game that aims to faithfully recreate battles between nations and factions from 1040 to 1270 AD, specifically across Northern and Central Europe — including England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Baltic peoples, Mongols, and others.
Combat takes place on grid-based maps with an isometric perspective and visuals reminiscent of traditional tabletop wargames. Players take command of a historically modeled army — such as heavy knights, archers, light infantry, or exotic troops like the Cumans or Baltic crusaders — and must position them strategically on the battlefield to meet objectives such as “rout 40% of enemy troops and at least 25% more than your own losses,” among other variations.
Each unit has specific attributes that affect its effectiveness, such as type (heavy infantry, light cavalry, archers, etc.), morale, experience, weaponry, formation, and the terrain it occupies. Terrain plays an important tactical role: hills, forests, open fields, and difficult terrain offer advantages or disadvantages depending on the unit. Additionally, the positioning of generals directly influences the performance and morale of the units under their command.
Actions on the field follow a classic alternating turn-based model, but with simultaneous resolution of attack and reaction phases. When moving or attacking, players are shown percentage estimates of possible outcomes (win, draw, loss), based on unit conditions, positioning, and tactical modifiers. During battle, units can become disordered, fragmented, or routed.
Game Modes
The game offers a variety of modes, including:
- Historical Battles: Detailed recreations of real-world engagements such as Hastings (1066), Bouvines (1214), and Lake Peipus (1242), with authentic formations and historical context.
- Campaigns: Series of battles with progressive (or fixed) difficulty, background narratives, and limited troop management, covering events such as the Northern Crusades and the Mongol Invasions.
- Custom Battles: Create “what-if” confrontations between any available factions, with randomly generated or custom-edited maps and a variety of objectives.
- Quick Battles: Fast matchups from dozens of pre-set historical encounters.
- Sandbox Campaign Mode: Lead campaigns between any two factions in the game, with thousands of possible combinations.
- Multiplayer (PBEM): Player-versus-player battles via Slitherine’s server, supporting both historical and custom matchups.
Visual Experience and Interface
Battles feature detailed 3D-styled animations, floating heraldic banners, and visually diverse battlegrounds. Clear visual indicators show unit status (morale bars, fragmentation status, etc.), and data tables and forecasts are readily accessible through the interface, allowing players to make decisions based on concrete tactical information.
About the game
Field of Glory II Medieval is a turn-based tactical game set in the High Middle Ages from 1040 AD to 1270 AD.
This was the heyday of the mounted knight. Armoured from head to toe by the later 12th century, European knights rode heavy horses in tight formation, and delivered a devastating charge with couched lances.
Setting
Major themes of the period include the struggles of the Kings of France against the Kings of England and the German Emperors, the English wars of conquest or attempted conquest against the Welsh, Scots and Irish, the Baltic Crusades and the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe. With dynastic struggles and rebellions by powerful nobles thrown into the mix, Europe was in an almost constant state of war.
Field of Glory II Medieval allows you to take command of the armies of the Anglo-Saxons and Normans, post-conquest England, France, Germany, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Low Countries, the Free Cantons, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Poland, the Teutonic Knights, the pagan Old Prussians and Lithuanians, Russia, Hungary, the Cumans, Volga Bulgars and Mongols in an endless variety of battles and campaigns set in 11th-13th century North and Central Europe.
Armies
Lead your chosen army and its named generals to victory in set-piece historical battles or “what-if” custom battle situations against an AI or human opponent. Choose your forces from historically accurate orders of battle allowing all of the options and variations that would be available to a real general of that nation at any date during the era.
Field of Glory II Medieval has more than 100 beautiful and historically accurate fully animated troop units, each with multiple variations to bring out the colour and variety of the era. Watch the swords flash and the arrows fly! Count the cost of victory or defeat as bodies litter the battlefield.
Battles
Field of Glory II Medieval has a campaign system that concentrates on the battles, and allows real strategic decisions without time spent moving armies around a strategic map. Each battle is vital to your progress. Your army will gain experience and elan as it goes from victory to victory against your enemies and their allies.
There are four historically-based campaigns covering major conflicts of the era: The Angevin Empire, The Northern Crusades, Alexander Nevsky and the Mongol Invasions. There is also a sandbox campaign system that allows you to lead any nation (and their historical allies) against any other nation (and their allies) – giving thousands of permutations.
