Era of Miracles is an indie action-RPG with pixel-art graphics set in a medieval-fantasy world where orc factions stand on the brink of civil war. It was developed by Argentum Gaming and was originally released on October 2, 2019.

The game features visuals reminiscent of 16-bit era RPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, or Shining Force II. Promising considerable freedom of action and non-linear progression, the title involves combat, character development, exploration, and NPC interaction in a 2D top-down world.

Published by Argentum Gaming and available for Windows, Era of Miracles currently holds hundreds of very positive reviews on Steam, at least as of the date of this post.

Gameplay

Era of Miracles features a top-down action-RPG structure combining exploration, combat, and NPC interaction. Each playthrough begins with an optional tutorial where the player learns basic controls, including movement, attacking, accessing menus, and using abilities. Actions can be performed with either keyboard or controller, with specific commands for attacking, running, opening the inventory, and navigating menus.

The combat system includes both melee and ranged attacks, depending on the equipped weapon. Bows and arrows can be used through a dedicated shooting skill, while melee weapons require the player to close in on enemies. Character progression is represented by levels, which increase as the player defeats enemies and completes tasks.

The inventory organizes equipment and consumable items, offering a “best gear available” function to streamline character management. Potions and other utility items can be assigned to quick slots for immediate use during exploration or combat.

The game also includes a lockpicking minigame, similar to the one in Skyrim, in which the player must manipulate a pin and a cylinder to unlock chests. Additionally, numerous NPCs populate the starting area, offering interactive dialogue and simple missions such as escorting characters, locating items, or assisting travelers. The environment consists of small villages, caravans, creatures, and humanoid enemies, forming the initial set of challenges and interactions available to the player.
