Christmas at the Overlook

Return to the hotel from the Kubrick's movie and discover what happens there at Christmas time.

Christmas at the Overlook is an indie free first-person horror adventure game that invites players to return to the Overlook Hotel, as depicted in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, during the Christmas season. Developed by James Smart and released on December 17, 2021, the game features the hotel’s iconic maze, immersing players in a richly nostalgic atmosphere filled with Easter eggs and references to both the film and Stephen King’s original novel, The Shining.

The game is designed as a casual homage to the cinematic adaptation, incorporating elements of humor alongside non-traditional horror elements. Players focus primarily on exploring the intricately recreated hotel’s maze, which requires navigation and problem-solving skills. The controls are user-friendly, allowing anyone to play without complications, and the game lacks complex combat or inventory systems. As a Christmas-themed title, it is adorned with seasonal details that enhance the festive experience.

With its three difficulty settings—easy, medium, and hard—Christmas at the Overlook lets we adjust the complexity of the maze and the behavior of interactive elements. This difficulty adjustment adds replay value, enabling players to experience the same maze differently based on their chosen level. As they navigate the hotel, players can uncover hidden references to The Shining and other elements from Stephen King’s work, culminating in a potential reward.
