Gameplay

Beyond Blue is a single-player adventure following Mirai, a charming and athletic deep-sea researcher leading a team to investigate ocean life, such as whales and other marine creatures. It is often compared to Abzû, another underwater exploration game, but Beyond Blue is more open, even though it might feel empty in terms of interaction with the wildlife. The game blends educational value with narrative elements, providing a relaxing experience that teaches about marine life.

A typical playthrough lasts around three hours. The game is mission-based rather than fully open-world, and the main activities include scanning marine creatures and collecting samples. There are eight dive locations available for exploration.

Between missions, Mirai returns to a submarine, which serves as a base, though it doesn’t feature crafting, upgrades, or new equipment. However, in this vehicle, players can access an encyclopedia with information about the scanned species.

The game also includes 16 short films about marine biologists and ocean exploration. Despite its tranquil setting, some parts of the ocean can appear dark and deep, which may be unsettling for those afraid of the deep sea. However, there is no danger, as the focus is on education and documentary-style gameplay. The experience has been described as feeling like “flying” underwater.
