Atari 2600 Space Invaders

A modern take on a legendary classic!

In 2017, developer Richard Langford of Langford Productions decided to honor the legacy of a arcade phenom with a modern remake for PC (Windows) named Atari 2600 Space Invaders. Released on April 3 of that year, this fan project reimagines Space Invaders 2600, the Atari 2600 port, with the same addictive gameplay while expanding it with fresh features.

In fact, few games define the golden age of arcades as much as Space Invaders. Originally released in 1978 by Tomohiro Nishikado and published by Taito, it quickly became a global phenomenon. When the title made its way to the Atari 2600 in 1980, it not only brought the arcade experience home but also boosted the console’s popularity to unprecedented levels. While it wasn’t arcade-perfect, the 2600 version stood out thanks to its wealth of unique gameplay variations, cementing its place as one of the most beloved ports of the era.

So, basically, what we have here basically is a fan remake of the Atari 2600’s Space Invaders plus new features, including support to Xbox 360 and optional aesthetic styles. We can say it’s also tribute, since, by capturing the essence of the 2600 port and reintroducing it to a new generation, Richard Langford has created a project that resonates with both veteran Atari fans and curious newcomers. It’s nostalgic, it’s creative, and most importantly, it’s free to download and enjoy.

A blend of old and new

The core mechanics remain intact: you pilot a laser cannon along the bottom of the screen, moving side to side and blasting away at descending waves of alien invaders. Protective shields provide cover, though they can be worn down by both enemy fire and your own shots.

The remake also incorporates all of the quirky game variations from the Atari 2600 version—such as invisible invaders, zig-zagging bombs, fast projectiles, moving shields, and even two-player cooperative play. Combined with modern inputs (keyboard or Xbox 360 controller), this results in a faithful yet flexible gameplay experience.

Visuals and atmosphere

One of the remake’s most striking aspects is its variety of presentation styles. Players can switch between eight different graphical modes, including faithful recreations of the Atari 2600 and Taito’s arcade original, as well as more experimental looks like ZX Spectrum, voxel, modern 3D, and even a hand-drawn “pen and paper” aesthetic similar to Flash games such as Notepad Invaders. Each style comes with its own sound and music adjustments, further enhancing the retro-modern blend.

With over 100 possible combinations of visual styles and gameplay modifiers, no two sessions need to feel the same.
