Story

After a shocking thunderstorm brings them together, unlikely allies Lila the mouse and Lumion the Spirit guardian must work in tandem to restore balance to their quaint village. Thankfully, Lila has her big heart and electrifying new powers to aid her on this journey. Guide her through a heartwarming adventure across Sainte-et-Claire to befriend playful electric spirits called Kibblins and illuminate this village once more.

Gameplay

In The Spirit and The Mouse, you control Lila, a small and brave mouse who, after being struck by lightning, gains electrical powers. These powers, originally belonging to Lumion, a Guardian Spirit, now allow Lila to help the residents of the peaceful French village of Sainte-et-Claire by solving their everyday problems, many of which are related to electricity.

The gameplay focuses on exploration, puzzle-solving, and item collection, blending smoothly with platforming mechanics. You will use Lila’s agility to navigate through the environments and her newly acquired electrical powers to interact with objects. The mouse can climb walls, jump over objects, and even pass through metal grates using her electricity abilities, which opens up new areas for exploration.

Missions and the Kibblins

A significant part of the gameplay revolves around interacting with Kibblins, electric spirits that help power the village. Each Kibblin has its own personality, and to convince them to return to their Kibblin Box (a device that restores electricity to homes), you must help them complete various tasks. These missions are diverse, ranging from playing hide-and-seek to solving code puzzles.

One of the tasks involves collecting electrical energy throughout the village, which is essential to activate the Kibblin Boxes. To gather this energy, you simply need to electrify metallic objects you find along the way. Additionally, there is a side mission with Kishine, a special Kibblin, that involves collecting light bulbs scattered across the map. Gathering these bulbs unlocks upgrades and useful hints to aid you in your journey.

The French village of Sainte-et-Claire is beautifully detailed, and since you play from the perspective of a small mouse, the world is seen in a unique and charming way. As you explore, new areas will be unlocked and abilities will be gained, allowing you to access previously unreachable places. For example, the ability to travel through electric wires provides a convenient and fun way to quickly navigate the environment.

In addition to completing missions, the mouse can also engage in optional activities, such as finding collectibles, which add even more depth to the exploration.

Challenges and accessibility

Although the game’s challenges are not excessively difficult, they strike a good balance between fun and complexity, requiring attention and logical thinking without frustrating the player. The controls are intuitive, with clear yet unobtrusive visual cues indicating when you can interact with objects, climb surfaces, or use your electrical abilities.

The Spirit and the Mouse also features accessibility options, where you can adjust control sensitivity, enable or disable hints, and use settings like a colorblind mode, making the game accessible to a wide range of players.
