Machinarium is an independent point-and-click adventure with a steampunk theme that follows a small robot that can change its height to help solve puzzles while searching for his kidnapped girlfriend. It was developed by Amanita Design and initially released on October 16, 2009.
The game stands out for its unique hand-drawn visual style and the absence of written or spoken dialogue, conveying actions and emotions through animated thought bubbles. Puzzles vary in complexity and require logical thinking, item combination, and careful exploration of static screens. A hint system with minigames assists players who get stuck, which should ensure that the experience is challenging without being frustrating.
Published by Amanita Design with versions for Linux, Windows, Macintosh, iPad, Fire OS, Android, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Windows Phone, Windows Apps, Ouya, PlayStation 4, tvOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Flash, Machinarium was very well received by critics, winning multiple awards and honors. At the time of this publication, it has hundreds of very positive reviews on Steam and is rated 4.6/5 on GOG.

Gameplay
Machinarium is a point-and-click adventure set in a mechanical world, where the player controls a small robot who has been expelled from the city and must return to confront the Black Cap Brotherhood and rescue his girlfriend.
Exploration is carried out through static, non-scrolling screens, where players click on objects in the environment to manipulate them, collect items in the inventory, and solve a wide variety of puzzles. Puzzles range from simple item combinations to more complex pattern analysis. A characteristic mechanic is the robot’s ability to change his height, allowing him to reach objects or interact in different ways.
The game has no spoken or written dialogue; all communication is presented through animated thought bubbles that illustrate ideas and memories instead of words. Some extra story scenes can be revealed by leaving the character idle in certain locations.
A unique aspect of the interaction system is that only objects within the protagonist’s reach can be clicked. Additionally, Machinarium is notable for removing the possibility of player death, and when progress is difficult, it offers a two-tier hint system: a simple hint (limited to one per screen) or a complete walkthrough. The walkthrough takes the form of an illustrated book showing the solution in concept art panels, but can only be accessed after completing a side-scrolling shooter minigame.
Initial progression is linear, screen by screen, but as the adventure advances, multiple areas become available simultaneously, offering greater freedom of exploration.
