Hogwarts Legacy is a third-person action-RPG set in the late nineteenth century within J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise, taking place before the events of the original Harry Potter series. It was developed by Avalanche Software and initially released on February 10, 2023.
The game follows a student enrolled at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, who attends classes, learns spells, and explores an open-world version of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas. With the help from classmates and professors, the player embarks on a journey to uncover an ancient secret hidden within the wizarding world. The gameplay also places a strong emphasis on character customization.
Published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label and released for PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, Hogwarts Legacy was generally very well received by critics, earning several awards, and became a massive commercial success. Warner Bros. later announced plans for a sequel, which is expected to be connected to the upcoming television reboot of Harry Potter (from which we don’t expect much).

Hogwarts Legacy is an action RPG in which you take on the role of a new Hogwarts student, created through a customization system that lets you adjust appearance, voice, and other details. The Sorting Hat determines the character’s House—Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin—each with its own unique common room and a handful of exclusive quests.
Progression is tightly linked to school life: attending and completing classes is essential, as it unlocks new mechanics such as broom flight, potion brewing, and spell learning. Throughout the playthrough, the character develops a personalized combat style by improving talents, abilities, and spells using experience points gained through battles, exploration, and missions.
Combat is dynamic and centered around the quick combination of different spells, each with its own advantages, tactical uses, and synergies. The system includes dodging, ability upgrades, and magical equipment—such as wands, robes, and various artifacts—that can be found, purchased, or unlocked as the campaign moves forward. Plants and potions can also be used as support tools, such as mandrake screeches that stun enemies.
Exploration follows an open-world structure, allowing players to visit several areas inside and around the castle, such as Hogsmeade—with its classic shops and establishments; the Forbidden Forest—home to creatures like centaurs, spiders, and other threats; and the Room of Requirement, which works as a fully customizable space where players can install potion stations, planting tables, and even change the architecture as they progress. The Room also contains Vivariums, dedicated environments for caring for magical beasts: players can capture, tame, breed, and ride creatures such as hippogriffs and thestrals, in addition to interacting with unicorns, kneazles, and puffskeins.
The map can be freely explored, although some areas require story progression to access. Movement includes fast travel via Floo Powder, broom flight, and riding certain creatures. While exploring, the character faces enemies such as goblins, poachers, and trolls, finds gear through treasure chests, and uses the Revelio spell to reveal hidden items and secrets.
The game also features companions—NPCs with their own questlines—who may accompany the player during specific objectives, expanding narrative interactions and combat options.
The PlayStation 5 version launched alongside the Xbox Series and Windows versions but included exclusive content: the Haunted Hogsmeade quest, in which the player investigates an abandoned shop that later becomes available for selling items, along with a shopkeeper cosmetic set. This content was later released for other platforms via a free update. PS5 pre-orders also included the Felix Felicis potion recipe, which reveals gear chests on the minimap for one in-game day.
