Genesis (Mega Drive) emulators

A guide to free emulators of this dear old 16-bit console for modern systems.

This article brings a list with some Genesis (Mega Drive) emulators, with some info, download links and stuff. These programs are all free and should run on modern systems.

Some games in our site are ROM files, and some of these ROM files are for Genesis (Mega Drive). These games are all legally free, but they require an emulator to run. Therefore, we’ve compiled this list to assist those who either don’t have the original hardware or prefer to play these games on their PCs.

  • Kega Fusion is a wide used emulator for Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Pico-8, 32X, and various other platforms with a focus on emulation accuracy. It has builds not only for Windows but also for Linux and Mac.
  • BlastEm – A free and open-source emulator for Mega Drive (Genesis), Master System, and Game Gear that promises high accuracy and speed, even on low-end hardware, for Windows, Linux, and Mac. It is user-friendly with an easy-to-use interface.
  • Gens – Despite its limitations, gens is a popular emulator for Mega Drive/Genesis that supports joysticks, online multiplayer via Kaillera, save states, graphical filters, and various other features (official sitevideo).
  • GENPlusDroid – A free emulator for Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System for Android, allowing gameplay on smartphones running this operating system. It is a solid option on Android devices. It is highly rated for its compatibility and performance.
  • Genesis Plus GX – An emulator for Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System for multiple platforms, including Windows, Linux, and consoles like the Wii. It is known for its accuracy in emulation and broad compatibility. This emulator is now available on many other platforms through various frontends such as Retroarch (libretro), Bizhawk and OpenEmu.
  • RetroArch – An emulation platform that uses cores to support a wide range of systems, including Mega Drive/Genesis. It is known for its flexibility and extensive customization options.
  • Final Burn Alpha – A quite stable emulator, with many features, and supports various systems, including Neo Geo, Mega Drive, MSX, ColecoVision, Capcom (CPS-1, 2, 3, and others), and more. There are some drawbacks: it does not support mapping the native Master System Reset button, which can affect certain games on this platform, and your ROMs may not be compatible with FBA. Also, looks like it was abandoned.
  • MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) – Although more known for arcade games, MAME can also run Mega Drive/Genesis games through specific cores.
  • Raspberry Pi Emulation Station – For Raspberry Pi users, Emulation Station is a graphical interface that can use various cores to emulate Mega Drive/Genesis, popular among DIY emulation enthusiasts.
  • OpenEmu – An emulation platform for macOS that supports various systems, including Mega Drive/Genesis, known for its intuitive interface and system integration.
  • GME (Game Music Emu) – GME is a collection of game music emulators that also includes support for Mega Drive/Genesis. It is useful for listening to game soundtracks beyond just emulating the hardware.
