Carlos the Taco is an independent side-scrolling platform game in which an anthropomorphic taco must rescue his kidnapped fiancée across stages set in Mexican villages and deserts. It was developed by Victoria Games and released on January 9, 2023.
The mechanics follow the conventions established by the platforming genre since the 1980s, remaining familiar to players with even modest, albeit true experience in games. The visual style is cartoony, and the overall tone is lighthearted and humorous.
Published by Victoria Games itself and available for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Carlos the Taco has gathered dozens of positive reviews on Steam, at least as of the time of this writing.

Gameplay
Carlos the Taco is a 2D side-scrolling platformer set in Mexico, where the player’s goal is to rescue the protagonist’s kidnapped fiancée by overcoming hazards such as skeleton-like enemies and environmental traps. Core movement includes a double jump as well as stomping on enemies to defeat them. The average playthrough lasts about 1 to 2 hours.
The game features a sequence of linear stages, most of them taking place in desert landscapes and Mexican villages. There is little variation in environments and enemies, with the exception of specific levels that introduce distinct mechanics, such as jetpack stages.
Throughout the campaign, Carlos encounters themed enemies and can collect temporary power-ups that alter his abilities:
- Ketchup Machine Gun – a ranged weapon that quickly eliminates enemies.
- Chicken Transformation – grants new moves, though with more difficult controls.
- Jetpack – enables flight in certain levels, adding variation to gameplay.
The title also features combat elements tied to Earth, Ice, and Fire, along with the use of elixirs to defeat foes.
Progression is checkpoint-based: once defeated, enemies and bosses do not respawn after the player dies, which lowers the overall level of challenge. Boss encounters appear at key points in the campaign.
