Gameplay
Brotato is a game that combines roguelike, survival, and strategic progression mechanics, where a heavily armed potato faces hordes of alien enemies in timed waves. It is often compared to other horde survivals like Vampire Survivors due to its horde mechanics but stands out for having a more flexible use of multiple weapons simultaneously, allowing the choice between automatic or manual aiming, and offering greater control over progression.
Each match consists of up to 20 waves of enemies, each with a limited duration. When the timer ends, the next wave begins regardless of the number of remaining enemies. As waves progress, the difficulty gradually increases. Unlike other roguelikes, defeating all enemies is not required to complete a wave — survival until the timer reaches zero is the primary goal.
Each character in Brotato has a unique set of stats and abilities that shape their playstyle, along with a starting weapon. The right combination of character and weaponry can drastically influence the outcome of a run. Players can equip up to six weapons simultaneously (or more, depending on the character), and identical weapons can be fused to create higher-rarity, more powerful versions.
The game offers a vast selection of items that affect the character’s stats, such as health regeneration, damage, range, and armor. Some items synergize with others, enabling advanced strategies. For example, items that increase the number of trees can be paired with those that spawn turrets upon tree destruction. However, some items in Brotato may have negative effects that impact the player’s strategy, such as handcuffs, which cap maximum health. This adds a risk/reward management layer to the gameplay.
Weapon sets (like precise or medical) and their specific bonuses (such as increased critical hit chance or range) encourage specialization to create optimized builds, whether focused on massive damage, resilience, or HP regeneration. For instance, having six weapons of the precise type can grant a significant critical hit chance bonus. This RPG-inspired mechanic is a standout feature.
Materials collected from defeated enemies are used to buy and upgrade weapons and items at the end of each wave. If the player does not collect resources manually, they are automatically stored and their value is doubled in the next wave. In addition to weapons and items, players can invest in attributes such as HP regeneration, armor, and damage — crucial for tackling more challenging waves. The protagonist’s health is restored at the beginning of each wave, but careful resource management is key to avoiding disadvantages in later stages.
After clearing the standard 20 waves, players can opt to continue in an endless mode, facing increasingly difficult waves. This option not only increases the challenge but also rewards players who wish to explore extreme builds.
Tips and hints
- Importance of Trees: Destroying trees is crucial as they provide materials, items, and fruits to restore health.
- Character and Starting Weapon Selection: Each character has unique stats and different starting weapons. Test combinations to find the one that best suits your playstyle.
- Weapon Combination: Two identical weapons can be combined to create a higher-rarity and more powerful weapon, but only do this if you have enough weapons in your inventory.
- Item Synergies: Combine items that work well together, such as those that increase the number of trees or turrets.
- Automatic Material Collection: The auto-collection mechanic reduces the pressure during chaotic waves. However, special items can allow materials to be collected from any distance, eliminating this concern entirely.
Priority upgrades
Focus on:
- Health Regeneration: High healing speed is essential for survival.
- Armor: Reduces incoming damage.
- Damage: Increases offensive efficiency.
In summary, explore different combinations of characters, weapons, and items to unlock the full potential of Brotato. With practice and attention to synergies, you’ll be prepared to face the toughest waves.
