Blacklist Mafia is an indie narrative adventure with side-scrolling gameplay, set in Chicago — one of the major economic hubs of Illinois — ruled by gangsters. It was developed by Victoria Games and initially released on August 1, 2024.

The game, which seems to take place during the era of the notorious Prohibition and features an intriguing noir atmosphere, follows a protagonist who arrives in the city aiming to establish himself here. However, after agreeing to help a woman, he quickly find himself in a dangerous situation involving criminals, police officers, and crime bosses.

Published by Victoria Games and available for Windows, Blacklist Mafia is a short game that stands out for its visuals, animation, soundtrack, and voice acting. On the other hand, it has a slower pace, limited gameplay, and little action. Still, it has received dozens of very positive reviews on Steam — at least at the time of this publication.

In Blacklist Mafia, players spend most of their time walking left and right, talking to NPCs, and following the unfolding story. The game feels much more like an interactive story than a traditional action adventure, being almost entirely focused on the plot, driven by long dialogues. This brings the game close to a kinetic novel, a subgenre of visual novels where there are no choices or branching paths — just a linear narrative.

Combat moments are rare and simple, vaguely reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade — far from a beat ‘em up, as some might expect from the screenshots. Here, the focus is on storytelling, not brawling.

Another highlight is the ragdoll-like physics system, which creates amusing animations in some situations and brings more life to the scenes. Dialogues are presented stylishly, with character portraits in focus and speech balloons, almost like a comic book. The visuals of Blacklist Mafia are also quite pleasant, but that would be a topic for another section.
