We Were Here Together is an independent first-person cooperative adventure game in which players must work as a team to escape from a dark and mysterious location on the frozen continent of Antarctica. It was developed by the Dutch studio Total Mayhem Games and was initially released on October 10, 2019.

The game is part of the We Were Here series and follows its core premise and basic gameplay, though with some changes. Players now spend part of the match together in the same area, allowing them to revisit locations from previous chapters as well as explore new ones, including the base camp where the expedition began, ice caves, and outdoor environments.

Published by Total Mayhem Games itself and available on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2, We Were Here Together was generally well received by critics, even earning some awards. At least at the time of this publication, it has hundreds of very positive reviews on Steam. After Together, the series continued with We Were Here Forever (2022), We Were Here Expeditions: The FriendShip (2023), and Where Are We? (upcoming).

Gameplay

The games in the We Were Here series are cooperative first-person adventure titles strongly focused on puzzle-solving. In each entry, two players take on distinct and complementary roles, often being separated into different environments and unable to directly see what the other player is seeing. Cooperation takes place almost entirely through voice communication, using in-game walkie-talkies.

In We Were Here Together, this concept is expanded further: in many puzzles, each player has access to only part of the information required to solve them, forcing both participants to accurately describe symbols, colors, mechanisms, visual patterns, and performed actions. Progress is virtually impossible without constant and clear communication, making verbal coordination a central element of the experience.

The narrative places players in the role of explorers in Antarctica who follow a mysterious distress signal broadcast over the radio. This investigation leads them through a variety of environments, including frozen outdoor areas, abandoned mines, and ancient ruins, each introducing new types of puzzles and mechanics. The puzzles are generally challenging and require not only observation, but also memory, logic, and the ability to correctly interpret the information provided by one’s partner.

We Were Here Together also stands out for its visual and narrative personality, blending an apparently serious atmosphere with creative elements and lighthearted details in the environments, which helps make the locations more lively and memorable. On the other hand, the experience can be quite niche: the design is strictly focused on two players cooperating via voice chat, and some puzzles rely heavily on color-based elements or require periods in which one player remains relatively passive while the other performs actions, which can affect the overall pacing of a play session.

About the game

Embark on a puzzle solving adventure in which you and a partner must prove you can communicate and work together to escape the haunted Castle Rock.

It all begins with an emergency flare lighting up the sky and a distress call waking you from uneasy dreams. Your fellow Antarctic explorers are in trouble, and the two of you left at base camp must work together to launch a rescue mission. If only you knew what you were getting into…

From the research base camp you’ll need to figure out a way to get to the source of the distress flare. Once you’re through the frozen Antarctic wastes, you’ll find yourselves separated inside a medieval castle, facing puzzles, secrets, and dangers! You and your partner start out with nothing but your wits and a walkie-talkie each. Observation, smart communication and teamwork will be the only way to escape from the sinister Castle Rock.

As we explore these frozen wastes, misfortune strikes once again. Through the fierce blizzard, a flare lights the sky, followed by a cry for help over the radio – broken, dying… No one else can come to their rescue. Can we make it back – together?
