About the game

Set off on a delightful expedition and use your photographic eye to uncover the mysteries of the magical TOEM in this hand-drawn adventure game. Chat with quirky characters, solve their problems by snapping neat photos, and make your way through a relaxing landscape!

Gameplay

In TOEM: A Photo Adventure, players take on the role of a young photographer embarking on a journey to witness a natural phenomenon known as “Toem”. The game offers a charming and unique experience, characterized by its simplicity and appeal.

Gameplay revolves around exploring various locations and assisting locals by solving puzzles through photography. Players travel through several Scandinavian towns and villages, encountering a range of non-playable characters (NPCs) who will ask for their help. Each quest involves using the camera to address problems, such as finding a lost boat, creating promotional material for a hotel, or capturing the perfect shot for a food blogger.

The world of TOEM is viewed from an isometric perspective, but using the camera shifts the view to first-person, enhancing immersion while photographing. Missions are diverse and often require creative interactions, like helping ants retrieve a frisbee or finding outfits for a party.

The game’s progression system is based on collecting stamps. By completing tasks and helping NPCs, players earn stamps necessary to pay for public transport and advance to new areas of the game. With a sufficient number of stamps, players can board a bus and move on to the next location in their journey.

In addition to missions and photography, the game allows players to customize their character’s appearance with different outfits, some of which have practical functions, such as protection against the cold. The visual style is monochromatic and reminiscent of children’s book illustrations, adding a special charm to the game. Although camera controls are limited—without lens or aperture adjustments—players can add filters and effects to their photos and use accessories like a tripod to enhance their selfie experience.

With a playtime of approximately three to six hours, TOEM provides a relaxing and enjoyable experience, ideal for those seeking a light pastime. The game offers a sweet and fun escape from daily routines, though the lack of advanced camera options might be seen as a limitation by some players.
