Space Pilgrim Episode I: Alpha Centauri

The beginning of a retro space saga full of surprises and retro charm!

Space Pilgrim Episode I: Alpha Centauri is a 2D indie adventure with a science fiction theme, centered around a space journey to the solar system also known as Rigil Kentaurus — the closest one to ours. It was developed by Pilgrim Adventures in collaboration with GrabTheGames Studios and initially released on December 21, 2015.

In the game — the first chapter of a story-driven series — you take on the role of Captain Gail Pilgrim, a veteran of interplanetary transport, in what seems to be just another routine mission to Alpha Centauri where, however, things soon take an unexpected turn. Despite the presence of some eccentric passengers, the protagonist doesn’t expect to get caught up in anything out of the ordinary.

Published by GrabTheGames and TheGamesFortress and available for Windows, Space Pilgrim Episode I: Alpha Centauri is currently free to play and has thousands of “Very Positive” reviews on Steam — at least at the time of this publication.

Gameplay

Space Pilgrim Episode I promises a classic adventure experience with a point-and-click interface, featuring simple controls and full support for mouse, keyboard, and controller — reminiscent of traditional graphical adventure games.

In this first episode of the series, players must solve small puzzles, interact with NPCs, and manage inventory items to progress through the story. You can combine objects to unlock new actions or solve specific situations, reinforcing the classic trial-and-error exploration style.

Although the game is accessible, the inventory navigation — which resembles a typical 2D JRPG layout — can be a bit confusing at first, especially when trying to use or combine items with other elements in the environment. Dialogues are frequent and are an essential part of the gameplay: interacting with characters is key to understanding objectives and moving forward. However, repeatedly pressing the action key may lead to accidentally restarting the same conversations.

The game may also present a small technical quirk: on first launch, it opens in a tiny window with no visible resizing options. To fix this, press [F1] and use [Tab] and [Space] to access the settings and enable full-screen mode.

Overall, the gameplay is simple and straightforward, with a strong focus on storytelling and character interaction — blending sci-fi themes with a charming retro feel.

About the game

Captain Gail Pilgrim has been flying starships since she was a kid, ferrying passengers between planets and space stations across the galaxy. She has no reason to expect that this latest trip to Alpha Centauri will be anything special, even if her passengers are a little more diverse than usual: a fusion scientist, a retired space marine and a priest.

However, it turns out to be far from a routine interstellar voyage …
