Pilgrims is an indie adventure game with gameplay focused on collecting cards — which represent characters, items, and actions — and solving puzzles that can be approached in multiple ways. It was developed by Amanita Design and originally released on October 5, 2019.

The game features a hand-crafted visual style and a narrative told entirely without written words, set in a whimsical medieval world filled with quirky situations and creative solutions where progress unfolds non-linearly, encouraging experimentation. While individual playthroughs tend to be short, the game offers strong replay value thanks to the variety of interactions and alternate endings.

Published by Amanita Design itself and available on Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, tvOS, Android, and Switch, Pilgrims has received positive reviews from critics. It also boasts thousands of “Overwhelmingly Positive” user reviews on Steam and holds a 4/5 rating on GOG — at least as of this post’s publication.

Gameplay

O Pilgrims is a point-and-click adventure with strong visual appeal and simple mechanics focused on experimentation, where you control various characters — represented as cards — and use them to interact with environments and solve small challenges. All items, characters, and available actions are also depicted as cards, which can be dragged onto the screen to trigger interactions.

This is a game that takes a more relaxed approach, emphasizing the player’s curiosity and creativity over complex logic puzzles, offering light challenges with quirky and often unexpected solutions. The emphasis is more on experimentation than “winning,” which also helps to avoid the famous rage quit.

The main goal of the narrative is to help one of the characters cross a river, in a stylized medieval setting that evokes the early English colonization of North America. The game’s opening scene already sets the playful tone, showing characters like a peasant, an old lady, a priest, and even the devil playing cards around a campfire.

The game structure is non-linear and allows for multiple solutions to the same situations. There’s no dialogue or written instructions — everything is conveyed through hand-drawn animations and visual speech bubbles, making the experience accessible across different languages and reinforcing the universal style of storytelling.

Though short — a first run takes about an hour — Pilgrims encourages replay, inviting players to return to the story and try new card combinations, unlocking different endings and bonus interactions. There are plenty of actions that, while not essential for progression, add humor and charm to the experience.
