Paradise Killer is an independent first-person adventure game in which players assume the role of Lady Love Dies, an investigator recalled from exile with the mission of uncovering the culprit(s) behind the murder of all the rulers of an island set in an alternate future. The game was developed by Kaizen Game Works and originally released on September 4, 2020.

The game blends visual novel elements, narrative investigation, and a distinctive setting marked by brutalist architecture, vaporwave aesthetics, greco-mythological references, and surreal psychedelic elements. Its world is open and features a non-linear design, allowing players to freely explore the island and interact with NPCs throughout the investigation. Depending on the evidence gathered, it is possible to convict virtually any character.

Published by Fellow Traveller and with versions for Nintendo Switch, Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, Paradise Killer was generally well received by critics, earning some awards. It is also highly rated by players on PC platforms, at least as of the time of this publication. In 2025, a sequel titled Promise Mascot Agency was released.

Synopsis

Paradise Island, a world outside reality. There’s been a murder only “investigation freak” Lady Love Dies can solve. Investigate and interrogate in this open world adventure. You can accuse anyone, but you’ll have to prove your case. It’s up to you to decide who’s guilty.

Gameplay

Paradise Killer is an open-world investigation and mystery game that places the player in the role of a detective tasked with solving a murder on an island that can be described as a kind of modern, decadent Olympus. Progression allows for multiple interpretations of the facts and the conviction of different suspects, depending on the choices made throughout the inquiry.

Worldbuilding is central to the experience and is expressed through environments, dialogue, collectible items, and the personal histories of each character. The world is inhabited by immortal alien beings, figures shaped by millennia-old rivalries, conspiracies, and constant betrayals. The cast is broad and eccentric, including characters such as a former assassin turned cosmic taxi driver and a goat-headed idol who trades in secrets. Their relationships are defined by centuries of accumulated hatred, power struggles, the worship of ancient and dangerous gods, among other stuff.

The game allows players to freely explore a three-dimensional island in search of evidence, clues, and testimonies in order to solve multiple interconnected mysteries. Investigation unfolds primarily through conversations with NPCs, examination of objects, and the collection of records and documents, leaving it up to the player to decide which leads to follow and which theories to consider.

Although a trial can be initiated at any time, gathering a larger amount of evidence generally increases the chances of securing a conviction. The game allows the player to accuse different characters, as it is possible to assemble sufficient proof to support distinct interpretations of the events. As a result, the outcome of the investigation depends largely on the player’s choices rather than on a single predetermined solution.

Gameplay mechanics are relatively simple and prioritize narrative progression over complex puzzle systems. Despite the occasional presence of environmental puzzles and minigames, most of the experience consists of exploring the environment, engaging in dialogue with characters, and pursuing multiple investigative threads in parallel. The open-world structure decentralizes the narrative and allows players to define the order and importance of each discovery.

About the game

A rogue human civilization hoping to resurrect dead alien gods. A murder behind locked doors.
‎Paradise is an island that regenerates every few millennia.

The psychic power that the alien worshipers within release into the universe is meant to feed and eventually resurrect their fallen deities. But this force also attracts undesired interest from demons, who eventually corrupt each island — until a new alternate reality is birthed by the Council.

‎The system isn’t perfect, but it will be one day — on Perfect 25, the next island-to-be.

But on the eve of rebirth, the Council is murdered and Paradise is killed.

In the aftermath, the “investigation freak” Lady Love Dies is summoned from exile to find the culprit. This is the crime to end all crimes.

What are the facts? What are the truths? Are they the same?
