Gameplay

Overcast: Walden and the Werewolf is a linear game focused on exploring eerie villages and isolated areas, where players must collect items such as ammunition and keys to progress. The game is divided into nine short chapters, including the prologue, and features an oppressive atmosphere with foggy landscapes and low visibility, designed to create tension and unease during exploration.

The main horror element is its frequent jumpscares, which intensify the experience but may become predictable over time. The setting is complemented by an immersive soundtrack and detailed sound effects. The music, in particular, stands out as one of the game’s highlights, enhancing the dark and immersive atmosphere alongside sinister sounds like footsteps and decomposing bodies.

The gameplay relies on simple and intuitive controls, with movement handled through the WASD keys and mouse. However, combat mechanics can be frustrating, especially during battles against bosses and enemies with “unnatural” movements, such as skeletons and giant spiders. The final boss fight is especially challenging, often regarded as one of the game’s most difficult moments, with a steep difficulty curve that may discourage some players.

The mini-map is a helpful tool for navigation, highlighting objectives and preventing players from getting lost in the explored areas. Despite this, the game’s visual design is simple, reflecting its limited budget, but fitting for an indie production.

Overall, Overcast: Walden and the Werewolf delivers a short and straightforward experience, aligning with what one might expect from an accessible horror game with a focus on atmosphere. While the gameplay includes repetitive moments and frustrating challenges, the title makes up for it with a well-executed soundtrack and an engaging setting.
