Nobody Wants to Die is a single-player first-person narrative adventure with a strong neo-noir and cyberpunk aesthetic, combining classic detective investigation with reflections on identity, consciousness, and technological immortality. It was developed by Critical Hit Games and initially released on July 17, 2024.

The game is set in 24th-century New York, where humanity has achieved a method of transferring consciousness between bodies. You play as a detective tasked with investigating a series of murders targeting the city’s elite. Gameplay involves exploring crime scenes, collecting and analyzing evidence using technological tools, conducting interrogations with multiple dialogue options, and digitally reconstructing events.

Published by PLAION and available for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Nobody Wants to Die has been generally well received by the so-called specialized critics, even getting some awards. At the time of this publication, the game also holds positive ratings on PC digital platforms.

Gameplay

Nobody Wants to Die is a first-person narrative adventure in which players investigate crime scenes, collect evidence, and interact with other characters through multiple-choice dialogue. The experience focuses on storytelling and investigation, with no traditional combat or action mechanics. The main campaign takes approximately five to six hours to complete.

The core investigation mechanic involves using various tools to analyze crime scenes. Among them is the Reconstructor, a device that allows players to recreate and visualize events that occurred on site, reconstructing actions in real time. Players scan the environment, identify points of interest, and use resources such as X-ray scanning and ultraviolet light to locate evidence.

Collected clues are organized on an evidence board, where the game asks players to establish connections and draw inferences from the gathered information. During reconstructions, it is possible to rewind specific moments of the scene to examine relevant details and understand the sequence of events.

While investigations form the core of the gameplay, progression is mostly guided, with the game highlighting the interactive points needed to advance the narrative. In addition to crime scenes, players can explore urban environments and converse with characters, with some choices affecting specific narrative outcomes and the fate of main characters.
