Make Way is an independent 3D racing game that allows players to build their own tracks and features a top-down perspective, vehicular combat, cartoonish graphics, party game elements, and online multiplayer support. It was developed by Ice BEAM and initially released on December 4, 2023.

Races promise to be frenetic, taking place on floating tracks in colorful and vibrant environments, combining as much as strategy as speed, all set to an acoustic soundtrack that provides a light and even nostalgic atmosphere.

Published by Secret Mode and available on Xbox One, Windows, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, Make Way received generally average to positive reviews from critics and was nominated for some awards. Additionally, it has thousands of very positive reviews on Steam as of the time of this publication.

Gameplay

Make Way is a top-down racing game that combines track building, combat, and multiplayer competition. Players can create their own custom circuits with unique rules, selecting and snapping together a variety of track pieces, including loops, seesaws, corkscrews, and train crossings. Obstacles and power-ups can also be strategically placed to hinder opponents or gain an advantage during races.

Each race involves up to six competitors who must navigate the tracks, avoid falling off edges, and use weapons such as goo cannons and Tesla coils to slow down opponents. Checkpoints serve as respawn points, allowing players to quickly return to the action after accidents. Floating name tags help identify competitors, and detailed sound effects, such as hammering when placing track pieces, enhance the experience. Fixed camera angles in certain races can obstruct the view of parts of the circuit, requiring memorization of turns and obstacles.

The game features a progression system in which performance in each race unlocks new track pieces, obstacles, and vehicles, expanding the possibilities for increasingly complex track designs. After each round, new pieces can be added to the course, creating larger and more dynamic circuits that evolve with every race.

Multiplayer supports up to six players, locally (split-screen) or online, with cross-platform options. CPU behavior can sometimes feel “unfair,” giving the AI slight advantages in certain situations. Race rules can be adjusted, including enabling or disabling traps and safety barriers, allowing players to customize the challenge level of each track.

Build your course

Work together—or against one another—to quickly build tracks using a range of ridiculous pieces, including loops, seesaws, corkscrews, and even train crossings. Then add obstacles and power-ups. Ruin your friends’ race with a well-placed barrier or jettison them off the side of a curve with a crafty boost-pad.

Blow up the competition

Six racers jostle and shunt to cross checkpoints and reach the finish line. Obliterate opponents with a range of wacky weapons, including goo cannons and Tesla coils, but beware: each checkpoint acts as a respawn point and revenge is a dish best served via a giant mallet or rooftop-mounted shotgun…

Keep on truckin’

The finish line isn’t the finish! Add new track pieces after each round to create monstrously large courses, and score bonus points with your performance to take home the trophy.
