Immortals Fenyx Rising is an action-adventure game based on Greek mythology, where a mortal must stop Typhon — here portrayed as a titan inspired by the primordial entity Typhoeus — to save the gods of Olympus. It was developed by Ubisoft and first released on December 3, 2020.

The journey of Fenyx, the said mortal and the protagonist here, begins when she finds her brother turned to stone. In her attempt to save him, she becomes entangled in a plot involving the Greek gods themselves, who have been corrupted or transformed by a curse. Set in a vast open world, the game blends humor, character customization, battles against mythological creatures, puzzle-solving, and numerous side quests.

Published by Ubisoft and available for Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Luna, Immortals Fenyx Rising was generally well received by critics. It also holds hundreds of very positive reviews on Steam — at least as of this post’s publication.

Gameplay

Immortals Fenyx Rising begins as Typhon escapes his eternal imprisonment, overpowers the Greek gods, and threatens to destroy the world. In desperation, Zeus calls upon the mortal Fenyx to challenge the titan’s power and restore order to Olympus.

Before starting the adventure, players can customize Fenyx’s gender, voice, and appearance — though in the canonical story, she is depicted as female. After unlocking the Hall of the Gods, these features can be changed at any time using Aphrodite’s Beauty Chair.

The game takes place on the Golden Isle, a vast open world divided into seven distinct regions, each inspired by Greek mythology. Players can traverse these areas in various ways: climbing cliffs, flying with Daedalus’ Wings, or riding mounts found along the journey. The entire map is accessible from the start, and the bird companion Phosphor accompanies Fenyx, marking points of interest on the map.

During exploration, players will encounter rifts that lead to the Vaults of Tartaros — platforming and puzzle challenges that test both Fenyx’s combat and traversal abilities. In addition to the main quest, there are plenty of side missions, puzzles, and combat trials scattered throughout the world.

Enemies include mythological creatures such as Minotaurs, Cyclopes, and Griffins, each with unique attack patterns. Combat combines fast, light sword strikes with slower, heavy axe blows, as well as ranged attacks using a bow and arrows. Managing stamina is crucial, as repeated attacks quickly exhaust the character.

As players progress, Fenyx can unlock divine abilities inspired by the gods — for example, Ares’ Wrath, which summons spears that launch enemies into the air. Weapons and armor can be crafted and upgraded by collecting the necessary resources found during exploration.
