Gameplay

The gameplay of Golden Light combines elements of horror, roguelike mechanics, and procedural generation, fostering unpredictability. The goal is to rescue your girlfriend, who has been taken by an unknown entity into a surreal and ever-changing world. To progress, players must explore hostile environments, collect keys, and unlock the elevator to the next floor while facing unpredictable threats along the way. The game consists of 21 floors and offers four possible endings, depending on the player’s choices and progression.

The level structure follows procedural generation, meaning the layout of environments, enemies, and items changes with every new attempt. No two playthroughs are identical, requiring constant adaptation to new situations. Additionally, any object in the environment can suddenly transform into an enemy. The game features three difficulty settings, allowing players to choose between a faster progression or a greater challenge.

Combat and exploration demand strategic thinking, as weapons are scarce and have limited durability, breaking after prolonged use. Alternatively, players can find items that can be consumed to restore health or thrown at enemies as an improvised attack. The atmosphere is enhanced by a sound system that not only contributes to the horror experience but also serves as an indicator of nearby threats or the exit’s location.

Upon dying, the player returns to a safe zone, where they can interact with bizarre characters, including a talking bicycle. In this space, weapons, supplies, and upgrades can be acquired using collected gold, making future attempts slightly easier. Progression requires collecting keys to unlock the elevator, but a mechanic known as the “sack” increases the tension—once the last key on a floor is obtained, all remaining enemies actively hunt the player down.

The game also features a destructible environment, allowing doors and even walls to be broken down, expanding strategic options for escape or combat. While the game supposedly includes multiplayer modes, such as cooperative play and free-for-all, some reports indicate that these modes may not be available for all players, particularly in the Steam version.
