Gameplay

Ghostwire: Tokyo is an action-adventure game set in a supernatural version of Tokyo, where a mysterious paranormal event has caused almost the entire population to disappear, leaving only empty clothes behind. Players control Akito, a young man possessed by KK, a spirit detective, as they explore the city to confront supernatural forces and uncover the whereabouts of Akito’s sister, who has been hospitalized following a fire.

The game structure is mission-based, with a strong emphasis on exploration and combat within a semi-open world. Alongside main missions, there are numerous side quests that enrich the narrative and expand understanding of Tokyo’s haunted landscape, often revealing small stories about the city’s residents and the events leading up to their disappearance.

In fact, side quests are particularly significant, ranging from light tasks to deeper stories. In some cases, players help trapped spirits resolve their issues so they can finally rest in peace. Other activities include locating tanukis and interacting with yokai cats who run convenience stores, offering items useful for progression.

Players must also collect spirits scattered throughout Tokyo, storing them in paper charms and releasing them at phone booths. This process is essential for accumulating experience and strengthening Akito, making it a core task for those aiming to complete the game.

The city is primarily explored on foot, but verticality plays an essential role. Akito can glide and use ethereal grappling hooks to reach high points, encouraging exploration of rooftops and alleyways. Each corner may reveal collectibles, secrets, or souls to rescue, which offer rewards and foster a constant sense of discovery. Moreover, the absence of fall damage allows for worry-free, fluid navigation throughout the city, making exploration particularly enjoyable.

Gameplay centers on the use of elemental abilities — wind, water, and fire — which Akito executes through hand movements inspired by Kuji-kiri gestures. Each ability has a specific application: wind provides fast attacks for single targets, water creates area impacts to push back enemies, and fire delivers high-damage explosive attacks. These abilities can be upgraded with experience points earned from defeating enemies and absorbing Yokai, which also grant Akito new powers.

Once enough damage is dealt, enemies’ cores are exposed, allowing Akito to destroy them with a finishing move that brings to mind Kaiju No. 8, in a way. While the game allows for experimentation with different combat approaches, mastering each ability and using them strategically against various enemy types requires a learning curve.

A skill tree enables players to enhance Akito’s techniques, such as reducing the time needed to absorb cores or boosting elemental attack effectiveness. Skill points are gained through mission progression or spirit collection, encouraging a gradual and rewarding sense of advancement.

Ghostwire: Tokyo explores horror through its atmosphere, set in a dark, constantly rainy city illuminated by neon lights. However, psychological horror prevails over jump scares. Encounters with enemies, such as a towering woman with long black hair and a disturbing smile, recall figures from Japanese folklore but without relying on traditional horror game tactics, making it more of an aesthetic feature than a source of genuine fright.
